How to Obtain a Special Skills Dog Guide from Lions Foundation of Canada

Qualifications
Special Skills Dogs of Canada Dog Guides are only provided to applicants who are legally physically disabled, and who qualify for the program, based on an assessment by the Lions Foundation Acceptance Committee.

Assessment
Applicants will be required to send a video, medical reports and character references with the completed application, and may be asked to participate in an in-home assessment which will provide our trainers with further insights into unique needs, as well as provide the applicant with more information about the program

 
     
 

Participation
Successful applicants stay for 19 consecutive days at Lions Foundation of Canada training centre where they will work and live with their Dog Guide every day. All travel (to and from Oakville), as well as room and board, are provided by the Lions Foundation of Canada. Training will include hands-on experience in all aspects of dog handling, and care including health and obedience issues.

What is the cost of a Special Skills Dog of Canada Dog Guide to the successful applicant?
No Charge!
What is the cost of Care and Feeding of a Special Skills Dog of Canada Dog Guide?
Same as costs for any pet dog. Following graduation, this cost will be the responsibility of the applicant.
