Foster Puppy Program

Lions Foundation of Canada receives dogs as puppies for its Dog Guide programs from its own breeding program, and from generous breeders. At eight weeks of age, puppies are placed in foster homes for approximately one year.

Training
The foster family is asked to raise the pup, socialize and teach proper house manners and basic obedience, while exposing the pup to as many different situations, experiences and people as possible.

Puppy training manuals and staff support are provided to the foster family as a guide for the proper development of the puppy.

  Application
Applicants complete a questionnaire and submit it along with a letter of intent and two letters of reference. Volunteer families attend a seminar outlining the program and the terms and conditions for raising a future Dog Guide.

  Support
Food for foster puppies is provided by Nestle Purina PetCare, and the Foundation covers routine medical and veterinary expenses. Most puppies are spayed or neutered.

  Assessments
Assessments every 4 - 6 weeks evaluate the progress of the puppy. At approximately one year of age, the dogs are recalled, assessed and assigned to one of three programs for 6 - 8 months of training. Upon successful completion of the training program, foster families are invited to the graduation ceremony, given a photograph of the graduating team, and join in the celebration to send the "puppy" home with a new partner.

  Satisfaction
"We keep fostering puppies because of the feeling of fulfillment it gives us, knowing we are doing something good for someone else." - a dedicated foster family.
