At Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides (LFCDG), we help people with disabilities live more independent lives by providing them with a Dog Guide at no cost. We are proud to be the only school in Canada offering seven distinct Dog Guide programs. Our operations span two locations: Oakville, ON, and Breslau, ON.

The Opportunity

Dog Care & Welfare Attendants play a vital role in ensuring the health, safety, and wellbeing of all dogs in our care. This is a hands-on, physically active role that involves cleaning kennels, monitoring dogs for medical or behavioural changes, and supporting our team in delivering the highest standard of canine welfare. This position requires standing, lifting, bending, and working in all weather conditions. You’ll work both independently and collaboratively, fostering a positive and supportive team environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide daily care to dogs, ensuring all welfare standards are met.
• Maintain a clean, safe, and organized kennel environment.
• Handle dogs humanely and efficiently, following LIMA principles and interpreting canine body language.
• Administer medications (oral and topical) and assist with veterinary care as needed.
• Work independently while maintaining open communication with team members and other departments.
• Build and maintain positive relationships with staff, volunteers, clients, and the public.
• Identify opportunities to improve department efficiency and quality.
• Share responsibilities across the team to ensure all tasks are completed.
• Support knowledge-sharing and collaboration across LFCDG.

Qualifications & Skills

• Experience working with animals in a professional setting preferred; Fear Free Certification an asset.
• Comfortable working in a busy and noisy environment (up to 100 decibels, hearing protection provided).
• Positive attitude with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
• Physically capable of lifting up to 50 lbs.
• Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and comfortable learning new software.
• Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
• Excellent time management and organizational skills with the ability to prioritize effectively.
• Flexible availability, including evenings, weekends, and statutory holidays.
• Valid G driver’s licence with a clean abstract and reliable transportation.

The Opportunity: (Description)

We are seeking a Puppy Nursery Attendant to support the development of future Dog Guides. Reporting to the Breslau Dog Care and Welfare Supervisor, the Puppy Nursery Attendant is responsible for maintaining a high standard of care for all breeding dogs and puppies housed at the LFCDG Breslau breeding facility. This is an active working position, where attendants are expected to clean kennel areas and observe canine medical and behavioural changes, while reporting to the necessary staff. The Puppy Nursery Attendant will foster a positive and productive work environment, and support a team that can deliver on the assigned work and initiatives. As a member of the breeding program team, the Puppy Nursery Attendant is responsible for creating and communicating task outlines, and working collaboratively with other team members and departments to ensure the wellbeing of the dogs.

Key Areas of Responsibility:

• Provide daily care for dogs in the puppy nursery.
• Handling dogs appropriately in all situations; following advice from other attendants and supervisor.
• Bathing, grooming, feeding, and exercising dogs/puppies.
• Checking dog’s health and administering treatments/medications.
• Monitoring the behaviour of the dogs, including monitoring for signs of stress and any behaviour issues that need to be addressed.
• Maintain records of dogs’ behaviour, health, and any other issues within the nursery.
• Help handle dogs who are being checked by vet advisor or supervisor.
• Assist with kennel maintenance including disposing of dog feces, and cleaning kennel areas.
• Assist with breeding management, whelping, and neonatal care.
• Provide enrichment, socialization and basic training to dog moms and puppies. 

You Will Bring to the Opportunity:

Education

• High school diploma required
• Post-secondary education in Animal Care (g. Veterinary Technician, Veterinary Assistant, Animal Husbandry, Genetics, and Reproduction programs) or dog training certificates are considered an asset

Experience

• Experience working with dogs in roles such as: dog sitter, dog walker, boarding kennel attendant, dog groomer, vet assistant, animal control officer, or obedience trainer.
• Personal or professional experience working with assistive technology and/or accessible environments is considered an asset. 

Knowledge

• Knowledge and understanding of dog care needs, canine health/diseases, and basic veterinary care.
• Knowledge and understanding of small animal husbandry.
• Knowledge of environmental enrichment programs to maintain good mental health in all dogs in their care.
• Knowledge of dog nutrition and weight maintenance.
• Excellent understanding of dog behaviour.

Skills

• Ability to effectively administer dog health treatments and preform various health and care procedures such as grooming, bathing, basic health checks, and nail trimming.
• Excellent dog handling skills, specifically with larger breed dogs and groups of dogs.
• Professionalism, compassion, and understanding when working with both people (staff, vets, volunteers and the general public) and dogs.
• Physical stamina and ability to lift up to 50 pounds (large dogs, dog food, etc.).
• Strong computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook, and the ability to quickly learn new software and database systems.

Other

• The attendants may be required to work irregular hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
• Valid Ontario G driver’s licence.
• Ability to obtain vulnerable Sector Police Background Check required.
