Paws Together Peer Support Program
Supporting Clients Through the Loss or Retirement of their Dog Guide
The bond between a client and their Dog Guide is unique and deeply meaningful. Whether you are grieving the loss of your Dog Guide or navigating their retirement, the emotions that accompany this transition can be complex and overwhelming.
Paws Together is a monthly peer support group designed to provide a safe, welcoming, and understanding space where clients can connect with others who have experienced similar journeys.
About the Program
The Paws Together Peer Support Program offers an opportunity for clients to:
- Share their experiences in a supportive environment
- Discuss feelings related to grief, loss, transition, and change
- Connect with others who understand the special bond between a client and their Dog Guide
- Learn healthy coping strategies and ways to navigate the grieving process
- Build meaningful connections with fellow clients
There is no expectation to speak if you are not comfortable. Whether you wish to share your story or simply listen, you are welcome.

Program Facilitator
Nicky Uliana
Diabetes Alert Dog and Autism Assistance Dog Trainer
Paws Together is facilitated by Nicky Uliana, a Diabetes Alert Dog and Autism Assistance Dog Trainer with the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides.
In addition to being a Dog Guide training, Nicky has a strong passion for supporting individuals experiencing grief and loss. Her interest in this area has been shaped through her academic studies in Thanatology, the study of death, dying, grief, and bereavement. Through this knowledge and her experience working closely with clients and Dog Guides, Nicky strives to create an environment where participants feel supported, understood, and empowered throughout their healing journey.
